Controlling Your Dogs Barking

Controlling Your Dogs Barking

Dogs communicate with barks…

…and if your dog is barking, there is usually a reason for it.

This training exercise in no way teaches your dog to attack but to use a simple method to make your dog understand you.

Dogs may hear something that we can’t, or they may just bark out of boredom, they may bark just to hear sounds and stay busy!

If you give your dog lots of exercise, toys, attention and have made your garden playful for your dog, teaching him not to bark should be fairly easy.

Start his training with his collar and leash, if he barks while on the leash a sharp jerk and a firm “no” will show him that his barking is wrong.

You can teach your dog to bark on command even if you don’t expect it to actually protect you. A barking dog is a superb protection and an outstanding burglar alarm, but you need the ability to control your dogs barking.

If you do not train your dog to bark only at the appropriate times (noise outside the window and when approached by strangers), your neighbours are likely to resent your best friend and you, because you fail to control his barking.

Breaking your Dog of Digging

Breaking your Dog of Digging

Posted by on Dec 15, 2017 in Disciplining Dogs |

The instinct of the Wolf.

There are a lot of reasons a dog will dig holes, it may be instinct.

During the winter the Wolf will eat all of the food that he kills, this is because he is unsure of the next time he will eat.

During the summer, he will dig a hole and bury part of the kill and return later to finish it off, this is a lot like your dog burying a bone in the backyard. A dog that is outside in the summer may dig a hole to get out of the heat, in the winter he may dig a hole to get out of the cold.

They may also dig because they don’t get enough exercise; it is a great way to relieve that extra energy. (Have you ever watched how much energy a dog puts out when he digs a hole?)

This is usually because the owner doesn’t realise how much energy a dog has, and doesn’t give him the amount of exercise he needs. Yelling and screaming only reinforces the activity with negative attention, any attention is better than no attention, just ask your dog.

When you give negative support, you only make the problem worse; more holes are a real problem.

If you are one of the lucky few and your dog digs in front of you, just telling him no, may solve the problem.

However, most holes are not dug in our presence, especially if the dog digs from boredom, because when you are there, he isn’t bored.

One way of stopping this habit is to put a wooden stake in the centre of the hole he has dug, tie him to the stake with his lease and leave him there for about 20 minutes.

It will take a few more holes, but after you have several holes with stakes in the middle, he will relate the stake to the hole and being tied to the stake and the hole digging will stop.
NOTE Some dogs have been bred to dig; terriers and dachshunds, for example, were bred to hunt badgers. If you know digging will be a major problem for you, investigate a dog breed’s and inclination or natural tendency to behave in a particular way for digging, before selecting a new dog.

Breaking him of Chewing

Breaking him of Chewing

Posted by on Dec 15, 2017 in Disciplining Dogs |

One of the big reasons dogs chew is to relax!

One of the biggest problems dog owners face, other than house breaking, is chewing, and dogs can find things to chew in an empty room!

Your dog can chew the front piece of wood on your sofa, you don’t realize until your wife sit down one day and ruined a pair of stockings.

The area he had chewed was about 9 inches wide and went down into the wood 7 or 8 inches! It was time for me to teach him not to chew on things!

Chewing is a normal pattern for dogs, one of the big reasons dogs chew is to relax. There are other reasons and they can threaten your relationship with your dog! This is a destructive habit that needs to be altered.

Your dog may chew because he is teething, and just like with a baby it hurts (a lot), giving him frozen rawhide bones is a wonderful way to begin breaking this habit, keep a few in the freezer for him, just like you would do for a baby.

Because a dog’s attention span is all of a foot long, it is a good idea to get 10 or 12 rawhides chews to freeze, put five down, then in a few days, put them back in the freezer and put down the other five.

Each one smells a little different and this gives him a variety of things to chew on without endangering your furniture or shoes!

Also provide your dog with lots of toys, you can never have too many of them and he will get a lot of comfort from them, even when you are not around.

Play with him and his toys so he learns that they are fun to chew and he will choose them over other items he isn’t supposed to have.

Never give a dog an old shoe or sock as a toy.

They won’t know the difference between the ones he can have and the ones he isn’t supposed to have!

Boredom is another reason a dog will chew, he can’t go to school or work each day, doesn’t understand soap operas, and can talk to his friends on the phone, so he chews out of boredom!

Another small training issue solved by chewing toys, but with just a little understanding the use of other training aids can help to give your dog a happy and healthy lifestyle.
